Fifteen minutes from a city of five million people, lions hunt on open grassland. Nairobi National Park is the only wildlife park of its kind bordering a capital city, and the contrast is the whole appeal: a black rhino grazing with office towers stacked up on the horizon behind it is a photograph you cannot take anywhere else on earth.
Over 400 bird species and four of the big five live inside the fence. This is one of Kenya’s most productive rhino sanctuaries, and your odds of finding black rhino here are better than almost anywhere else in the country. Elephants are the one absence, as the park is too small to hold them. Go early: the predators are still moving at dawn, the light is at its best, and you can be back in the city before mid-morning.
