Lake Bogoria National Reserve protects a long, narrow soda lake in Baringo County, about 280 km north of Nairobi. Steep escarpments rise on both sides of the water, and along the western shore more than 200 hot springs bubble and hiss, with geysers shooting jets of boiling water and steam into the air.
The alkaline water supports the algae that flamingos feed on, and at times the lake hosts huge flocks of lesser flamingos that turn the shoreline pink. Their numbers change with conditions across the Rift Valley, as the birds move between Bogoria, Lake Nakuru and other lakes. The reserve is a Ramsar wetland and part of the Kenya Lake System UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Getting to Lake Bogoria
- From Nairobi: about 280 km, around 5 to 6 hours by road via Nakuru.
- From Lake Nakuru: about 2 hours north, making it easy to combine both lakes.
- Vehicle: a safari vehicle or 4×4 is recommended for the lake roads.

- Near the reserve: lodges and campsites close to the reserve gates.
- Lake Baringo: lodges on the shore of the freshwater lake to the north.
- Combined trips: many visitors stay near Lake Baringo or Nakuru and visit Bogoria by day.
