Kilifi is a small town on Kenya’s north coast, about 60 km north of Mombasa on the road to Malindi. It sits where the wide, deep waters of Kilifi Creek meet the Indian Ocean, crossed by a long road bridge with views over boats, mangroves and baobab-lined shores.
North of town, Bofa Beach offers a long stretch of quiet sand with far fewer people than the better known resorts. Across the creek, the Mnarani Ruins preserve the coral stone mosques and tombs of an old Swahili settlement, and the town itself has a growing scene of beach bars, small hotels and creative events.
Kilifi makes a good central base for exploring the coast. Watamu and Mombasa are each about an hour away, and Tsavo East is the nearest safari trip from Kilifi, close enough for a day or overnight visit.
