Lake Naivasha lies on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, about 90 km northwest of Nairobi and roughly two hours by road. Unlike the salty lakes further north, it is fresh water, fringed with papyrus and yellow fever trees, and home to a large population of hippos and more than 400 species of birds.
A boat ride on the lake brings you close to grunting hippo pods and African fish eagles swooping for fish. On Crescent Island, a private sanctuary reached by boat, you can walk among giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and waterbuck with a guide, one of the few places in Kenya where a walking safari is this easy.
Next door, Hell’s Gate National Park offers red rock cliffs, a narrow gorge and steaming geothermal vents, with cycling and hiking allowed among the wildlife.
