Overview

About this tour

Three stops within a few kilometres of each other, and three completely different experiences. You start at the Karen Blixen Museum, the farmhouse where Out of Africa was written, then move on to the Giraffe Centre and its raised platform, where the endangered Rothschild’s giraffes will take pellets straight from your hand.

The last stop is Kazuri Beads, a workshop that began in 1975 with two women and now employs several hundred, most of them single mothers, hand-rolling and hand-painting ceramic beads and pottery. You can follow the whole process from raw clay to finished jewellery and buy at the factory price. Literature, wildlife and a social enterprise that genuinely works, in a single day. All entrance fees, transfers, drinking water and a guide are included.

Day by day

Detailed itinerary

Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel and drives out to Karen. A guided tour of the farmhouse where Karen Blixen lived from 1917 to 1931 and wrote Out of Africa, kept with original furnishings alongside pieces used in the film, with gardens facing the Ngong Hills.

A short drive to the breeding herd of Rothschild’s giraffe. The raised platform brings you level with their heads and you can feed them by hand, while staff explain the release programme that has returned many of these animals to protected areas across Kenya.

Finish at the Kazuri workshop, founded in 1975 and now employing several hundred women, most of them single mothers. The guided walk covers the full process, from Mount Kenya clay through rolling, firing, hand-painting and glazing to finished jewellery and pottery. Time in the factory shop before you are driven back to your hotel.
