About this tour

The Athi River drops about twenty-seven metres at Fourteen Falls, near Thika, over a rock face broad enough to split the water into a row of separate cascades, which is where the name comes from. How impressive it is depends entirely on when you come: after the rains it is loud enough to feel, and in a dry spell it thins out considerably.

Local operators run boats towards the base of the falls, and the ground around them is good for walking and birdwatching, with Ol Donyo Sabuk standing directly behind. An hour and a half from Nairobi, cheap, and the easiest way to get moving water and open country into a single day. Entrance fees, transfers, drinking water and a guide are included.

Detailed itinerary

Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel after breakfast and heads north on the Thika superhighway, roughly an hour and a half, through the coffee and pineapple country around Thika to the falls on the Athi River.

Time at the falls themselves, where the river spreads across a wide rock shelf and drops in a series of cascades. You can walk the viewpoints along the bank, and local boat operators offer short runs towards the base at additional cost. The birdwatching around the site is good, with Ol Donyo Sabuk rising behind you.

After time for photographs and a picnic lunch if one has been arranged, you are driven back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon.
