The Tana at Sagana, two hours north of Nairobi, carries some of the best commercially run white water in East Africa. The standard day covers about fifteen kilometres of river with rapids up to grade four, broken by calm stretches where you can get out of the raft, float, and look at the gorge and the birds along the banks.
You do not need to have done it before. The guides run a full safety briefing and a paddle drill on the bank before anyone launches, every raft carries a guide, and safety kayakers stay on the water throughout. Helmets, buoyancy aids and paddles are provided. Gentler float trips on lower-grade sections can be arranged for younger children or anyone who would rather take it easy. Transfers from Nairobi, rafting fees, equipment, guides and drinking water are included.
