Hell’s Gate is one of the very few national parks in Kenya where you are allowed out of the vehicle, on foot and on a bicycle, and that single fact makes it a completely different experience from a game drive. Riding through open country past zebra, giraffe, buffalo and eland with red cliffs standing on either side of you is the reason to come.
The park takes its name from a narrow break in those cliffs, once an outlet of a prehistoric lake. Its gorges and volcanic plugs, Fischer’s Tower and Central Tower among them, are well known for having shaped the look of animated film. A guided walk drops into the gorge itself past hot springs and narrow rock passages, and the Olkaria Geothermal Spa nearby is a large pool heated by steam from below. Park fees, transfers, drinking water and a guide are included.
