About this tour

Karen Blixen ran a coffee plantation below the Ngong Hills from 1917 to 1931, and the farmhouse she lived in is now a museum. She wrote Out of Africa here, publishing it as Isak Dinesen, and the suburb that grew up around the property still carries her first name.

The house has been left much as she kept it, with original furniture standing alongside pieces used in the 1985 film. Guides take you room by room through her years on the farm, her relationship with Denys Finch Hatton, and the failure of the coffee business that eventually sent her back to Denmark. From the garden you look out at the hills where Finch Hatton is buried. Entrance fees, hotel transfers, drinking water and a guide are included.

Your driver-guide collects you from your Nairobi hotel for the drive out to Karen, a green suburb sitting at the foot of the Ngong Hills.

A room-by-room walk through the farmhouse, preserved with original furnishings alongside props from the film adaptation. Your guide covers Blixen’s years running the coffee farm, the writing of Out of Africa, her relationship with Denys Finch Hatton and the collapse of the plantation. Time afterwards in the gardens, which look towards the Ngong Hills, and at the agricultural museum and shop.

You are driven back to your hotel, or on to the Giraffe Centre, Kazuri Beads or another nearby stop if you want to make more of the day.
