If you have time for one museum in Kenya, make it this one. The Nairobi National Museum on Museum Hill covers natural history, culture and prehistory on a single site, and its Cradle of Humankind gallery holds a collection of early hominid fossils that few institutions anywhere can match, material excavated by the Leakeys in the Rift Valley and around Lake Turkana that changed what we understand about where humans came from.
The rest fills several hours without effort: the Great Hall of Mammals, the birds gallery, the cultural collections, and a substantial gallery of contemporary Kenyan painting and sculpture. Outside stands Ahmed, the enormous tusked bull of Marsabit who was placed under presidential protection in the 1970s. Botanical gardens and the Snake Park share the grounds. Entrance fees, transfers, drinking water and a guide are included.
